The surrounding area

Sardinia Sardinia, Italian Island second only in size and navel of the Mediterranean Sea, has always been a destination for travellers and writers who have praised the beauty without comparison. Sardinia still offers pristine places and coasts without settlements. Landscapes shaped by the powerful forces of time and nature, like those of Sulcis, in the south-west area of the island. A breathtaking scenery where the great monuments of nature mingle and blend with the history and culture of Sardinia. The imposing granite mountains and the spectacular karst caves shaped by underground springs. The fascinating mines and the abandoned villages of the Geo-mineral Park. The long white beaches and the cliffs overlooking the crystalline sea of the South Coast. The millenarians forests of Domus de Maria inhabited by the Sardinian deer and the white sand dunes. Here the wind carries the scents of the maquis but also the echo of history, along the coast and inland, where you can retrace the footsteps of distant civilizations, let fascinated by striking religious festivals and secular costumes, discover food and wine traditions and craftsmanship that seems suspended in time.

Sulcis Iglesiente The Sulcis Iglesiente spreads in the South West area of Sardinia, giving visitors a real journey back in time that allows to enjoy a scenery where the natural beauty blends and merges with the history and culture of the Island of Sardinia. Going through the roads along the coasts of Sulcis, it is easy to be fascinated by natural beauty, by the wonderful beaches characterised by dunes, by the pink flamingos and the white cliffs where you can admire the reflections of the pristine sea of Sardinia.

Iglesias Lovely and lively town, Iglesias has about 32.000 inhabitants in an area of 207.63 Sqkm. The medieval centre, the mines, the mountains, the lakes and the beautiful beaches make Iglesias one of the most distinctive tourist destinations of Sardinia. In a blend of ancient and modern there are some of the most fascinating tourist and natural spots of the province, as well as a huge cultural heritage.

Medieval Centre Iglesias, over the years, has kept the traces of the various dominations which have followed one another in its history. Of striking interest is the old town enclosed, like a case, by Pisan walls and towers

The Mines The whole of Sardinia, since the Savoy domination, held a leading role worldwide in the mining industry. Sulcis, with the mines of Monteponi and Montevecchio, has represented the flagship of all the activity for the extraction of minerals. Today, with all the activities resigned, all mines are part of the Geo-mineral park, which is an example of rehabilitation of old mining villages and of the mines themselves. In fact, today it is possible to visit miles of tunnels with the use of traditional wagons that once were carrying the precious mineral.

The Sea The Sulcis coast is over 200 Km long, designed by the skilled hands of the sea and wind and jealously protected by the hand of man. This makes the entire coastline a splendid representation of nature, by which very long beaches (Funtanamare, Cala Domestica, Calasetta , Buggerru) alternate with high cliffs, where you can admire breathtaking views and sunsets (Masua, Mercureddu)

Marganai Park Iglesias, is located at a stone's throw from the mountain site of Marganai. The Mount Marganai with its 3650 hectares and divided between the municipalities of Iglesias, Domusnovas and Fluminimaggiore is the destination of many visitors who have the opportunity to appreciate, beyond the naturalistic aspects, the animal species and the endemic variety that goes to form the flora. The Marganai Forest has kept over the years very suggestive features. Examples are the areas that have been subject to mining exploitation and that have nevertheless retained their landscaping beauty. The forest is an important destination for tourists and scholars and can be visited following numerous trails and paths, many of which are extremely suggestive. The forest has a guest house where you can stay overnight; the lodge is run by a cooperative that offers organised tours, either on foot or horseback, and the preparation of typical Sardinian food. Tourists can also visit the botanical garden of the forest, which represents the immense wealth of flora, which this area is rich in. Inside the garden, are gathered several geo-floral groups, which aim to reconstruct the physical and phyto-sociological environment of the area. The main purpose of this garden is scientific, but also educational. More information on: http://www.prolocoiglesias.it/Montagna.htm

history he history of Iglesias is linked, since ancient times, to the exploitation of the mines by the Phoenicians, the Punic and the Roman people. After the fall of the Roman empire the town fell into a deep crisis. It flourished again many years later with the name of Villa di Chiesa during the nomination of Pisa, and became the most important town of the southern part of Sardinia, second only to Cagliari. The origin of this name is linked to the many churches that were built in the town around the year 1300. In 1324 the town passed to the Aragonese, but between them and the Sardinian there were many fights that ended only in 1450, when Villa di Chiesa was again free and independent. In the second half of 1700, under the dominion of Piedmont, the mining activity was resumed, even if for a short time as the mines were again closed in the early decades of 1800. In 1850 the Monteponi company was born and gave a boost to the mining activity and the social development. Whilst the town lived a deep well-being, the economic conditions of the miners remained critical to the point that there were numerous incidents of violence, particularly in the early 1900. Later the town was the site of ongoing struggle between fascists and anti-fascists. Today, this historical heritage has become a tourist destination of great interest, both nationally and internationally, for the many tourists who wish to enjoy the true essence of Sardinia

Art Holidays, festivals, special events, with themes sometime sacred, sometime profane, handed down from the past or arising from the present, occupy a very important space in Iglesias and have developed a spirit, always combining, which comes from the people whom they are addressed to. Events that have a long history, growing from year to year, and link a land to the fruits that it gives, in an intertwining of tradition, religion and magic.
